Kente Weaving for Beginners — The Royal Cloth of Ghana

Kente is the most recognisable textile tradition in West Africa. On the runways of Paris and London. In the Akan royal courts for centuries. Here is how to make it yourself.

What is Kente?

Kente is a hand-woven strip cloth made by the Akan people of Ghana. Woven in narrow strips on a horizontal loom, the strips are sewn together to create larger garments. Each pattern and colour combination carries specific cultural meaning — communicating the wearer's status, occasion, and values.

Kente has been worn by Ghanaian royalty for centuries. Today it is worn globally as a symbol of African heritage and pride — and studied as one of the world's most sophisticated textile traditions.

What do the colours mean?

Gold represents royalty, wealth and high status. Black represents maturity and spiritual strength. Red represents blood, sacrifice and passion. Green represents growth, renewal and good health. White represents purity and festivity. Blue represents peace, harmony and love.

In traditional Kente, the colour combination chosen for a garment is as meaningful as the pattern itself. You do not simply pick colours you like — you choose colours that say something.

Can I learn Kente without a loom?

Yes. Our beginner bundle uses paper weaving and small cardboard loom techniques so you can learn the principles of Kente strip construction without specialist equipment.

Every pattern teaches a real traditional motif with its authentic Akan name and cultural meaning. The techniques transfer directly to a proper loom when you are ready.

Why is Kente having a global revival?

Kente appeared on the Paris and London fashion runways regularly through the 2020s. Major global brands began incorporating Kente-inspired patterns. The African diaspora community worldwide has embraced it as a cultural identity marker.

For makers outside Ghana, learning Kente is a way of engaging seriously with one of the world's great textile traditions — not as a consumer, but as a practitioner.
